Michigan Football is on a roll, snagging another top talent from the Transfer Portal!
This week, the Wolverines secured their third commitment from a former Utah Ute, adding tight end JJ Buchanan to their roster. Buchanan, who played under coach Kyle Whittingham in Salt Lake City, is a rising sophomore with three years of eligibility remaining after making a splash in all 13 games for the Utes in 2025. He made an immediate impact as a true freshman, racking up 26 catches for 427 yards and an impressive 5 touchdowns.
But here's where it gets interesting: While listed as a tight end, Buchanan's versatility shines through. According to PFF, he only played 10 in-line snaps in 2025, spending more time in the slot (269 snaps) or as a wideout (264 snaps). This flexibility makes the 6-foot-3, 225-pound Buchanan a valuable asset for Michigan, especially as they look to replenish their receiving options after losing players like Donaven McCulley, Semaj Morgan, and Marlin Klein to the Transfer Portal or the NFL Draft.
As a former four-star prospect from Coronado High School in Las Vegas, Nevada, Buchanan was highly sought after. He chose the Utes over offers from schools like BYU, Cal, Oregon State, Iowa State, and Boise State.
Dan Sorensen of 247Sports noted that Buchanan's size and frame would allow him to develop into a threat at either outside receiver or a hybrid WR/TE, creating mismatches for opposing defenses. The scouting report from 247Sports highlights Buchanan's exceptional athleticism and versatility, describing him as one of the region's best two-way players. He could conceivably play multiple positions at the college level, showcasing high-level body control and speed.
Could Buchanan's unique skill set revolutionize Michigan's offensive strategy?
