The AI Cheating Paradox: When Artificial Intelligence Becomes a Tool for Deception
In a surprising turn of events, a partner at KPMG, one of the world's leading consultancies, has been fined for an unusual form of cheating. The individual, whose name has not been disclosed, was caught using artificial intelligence to gain an unfair advantage during an internal AI training course. This incident raises intriguing questions about the evolving relationship between humans and AI, and the ethical boundaries that need to be established.
The fine, amounting to A$10,000, is just one example of a growing trend within KPMG Australia. The company has reported that over two dozen staff members have been caught using AI tools to cheat on internal exams since July. This has sparked concerns about the potential for widespread AI-assisted cheating in the accountancy industry.
But here's where it gets controversial... KPMG itself utilized AI detection tools to uncover the cheating. It seems the very technology they were training on was also being used to circumvent their own systems. The accountancy industry has been no stranger to cheating scandals in recent years. In 2021, KPMG Australia faced a fine of A$615,000 for widespread misconduct involving over 1,100 partners who were found to have engaged in improper answer-sharing on skill and integrity tests. In December, the UK's largest accounting body, the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA), took a bold step by requiring accounting students to take exams in person. The reason? It was becoming increasingly difficult to prevent AI cheating. Helen Brand, the chief executive of ACCA, described this as a "tipping point", where the use of AI tools was outpacing the safeguards put in place by the association.
Major firms like KPMG and PricewaterhouseCoopers have been actively promoting the use of AI in the workplace, reportedly as a means to boost profits and cut costs. KPMG, in particular, plans to assess its partners on their ability to use AI tools during their 2026 performance reviews. Niale Cleobury, the firm's global AI workforce lead, emphasized the responsibility of bringing AI into all aspects of their work.
However, some commentators have pointed out the irony of using AI to cheat in AI training. Iwo Szapar, the creator of a platform that assesses AI maturity, wrote, "KPMG is fighting AI adoption instead of redesigning how they train people. This is not a cheating problem in the new world order. It's a training problem."
KPMG has acknowledged the issue and stated that they have implemented measures to identify AI usage by their staff. Andrew Yates, the chief executive of KPMG Australia, acknowledged the challenge, saying, "We have been grappling with the role and use of AI in internal training and testing. It's a very hard thing to get on top of given how quickly society has embraced it. We take breaches of our policy seriously and are looking at ways to strengthen our approach."
