Iga Swiatek's Australian Open preparation has taken an unexpected turn, sparking concern among fans. For the first time in her career, the world number two is heading into the Australian Open with a record she's never seen before.
Swiatek recently faced a tough challenge at the United Cup, where she suffered two defeats. First, Coco Gauff bested her in the semi-finals in straight sets. Then, Belinda Bencic clinched another victory against her in the final. Despite Swiatek's losses, Poland still managed to reach the United Cup final, ultimately securing the title thanks to Hubert Hurkacz and a mixed doubles win.
This unusual pre-tournament performance raises questions about her readiness for the upcoming Grand Slam. Before this season, Swiatek had never lost more than one match before the Australian Open. In fact, in her eight seasons on the WTA Tour, she's only lost a single match before the Australian Open on five occasions. Furthermore, in both 2021 and 2025, she entered the tournament undefeated.
But here's where it gets controversial... This year's back-to-back losses to Gauff and Bencic mark a new low for Swiatek, but she is yet to win the Australian Open. Reaching the semi-finals in 2022 and 2025, she was stopped by Danielle Collins and Madison Keys, respectively.
Swiatek has consistently represented Poland at the United Cup, including a heartbreaking final loss to the United States in 2025. This year, despite her loss in the final, Poland rallied to defeat Switzerland and claim the trophy.
Following the victory, Swiatek expressed her pride and gratitude to the Polish team on Instagram, saying, “WHATTT? Kasia, Janek, Hubi and the rest of our amazing team…thank you. I’m so proud.”
Swiatek will now focus on preparing for the Australian Open, which starts on January 19th.
